Castillo Catadau Gran Reserva 2002

ABV: 14%
Closure: Cork
Retailer: Naked Wines
Price: £9.99
Serving Temperature: 18-20 degrees

I opened this bottle to let it breathe for a while but it may have improved with decanting. On pouring it was a dark ruby colour depicting the label colour and almost the same as port. A nice looking bottle with a traditional mesh of gold coloured wire and a lovely picture of a castle (could it be the winery?).

It had a quite powerful taste although pleasant, with tannins present and aromas of dark fruit. It was rounded in the mouth but with an underwhelming finish. Gran Reserva makes you think the wine is grand, it actually means that these wines are aged for two years in oak barrels and three years in the bottle, certainly this was not a very grand wine, just average.

A nice juicy steak would have complimented this bottle as I had it with a selection of cheeses and I am not sure it did it any favours. For an aged wine from Valencia I was a little disappointed when I thought about one of my favourites being Rioja so I can only give it 6/10.
