Loving this wine! Had it recommended to me and picked up a bottle at Tesco when it was on a special offer for around a fiver which was a great deal. I probably wouldn’t stretch myself to the normal price of around £10 but knowing it was £5 is certainly helping me enjoy it :)

It’s a blend of 80% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha and of course being Rioja it’s from Spain. It’s aged in oak for 2 years and carries a silver medal from the Decanter World Wine Awards. I’ve got the 2004 vintage and it’s natural cork stopper.

Berberana itself is one of Spain’s oldest wineries having been founded in 1877 and it’s the second largest Spanish wine brand in the UK. With that in mind it’s a shame that they have a terrible website!

The wine itself is a lovely deep red with a spicy aroma that reminds me of everything that is good about Christmas. It’s got nice sharp acidity and a long warming aftertaste with loads of fruit & hints of vanilla. I’ll confess that I don’t have a lot of experience of Rioja but this is certainly opening the door to trying more.
