This one was suggested by one of the entrants in our recent competition so when I spotted it at Tesco I thought I would give it a try. This one is an Australian Cabernet Sauvignon with a healthy 14% alcohol and I think it was around £4-5 although at the time they had a 25% off promotion for 6 bottles or more.
From a first sniff it was almost a little smokey and packed with loads of berries. It sparked memories of growing up on bramble jelly rolls with homemade jam after spending hours & hours picking the brambles. For me it’s the smell more than the taste which is so evocative and it’s memories such as this that make the wine enjoyable.
It’s a nice rich, dark red colour in the glass and as the label says it’s easy drinking and is bursting with berry flavours and just a little vanilla. It’s fairly soft at first taste but then perhaps a little too sharp for me. I’m not sure if it’s the higher alcohol compared to what I’ve tried recently but it’s got a slight burn and could be a little more mellow. I think it’s a decent wine for the money though and the “everyday drinking” tag is fair so on a Wednesday night it will do me nicely.
As you can see in the photo I’ve paired it with a delicious triple chocolate muffin which might not be too conventional but works for me 🙂 I’m sure it would be suited better with a nice meal though!
