Blackwood Ridge Shiraz

Colour: Fresh, transparent blood red.

Scents: Juicy dark plum, spice and dark berry.

Taste: Hints of spice, plum and cherry.

ABV: 14% (Late Harvest)

Thoughts: This is quite a fruity shiraz that lacks the usual depth of flavour and intensity that you would expect from a decent red. As a big shiraz lover, and in particular a fan of the reds that come out of MacLaren Vale and the Barossa Valley in South Australia, I was expecting a lot from the Plunkett Blackwood Ridge and was disappointed. The fact that it’s a late harvest and has a relatively low alcohol percentage for a red wine suggests that a good stint in the cellar could make all the difference to this Shiraz. For those not yet used to drinking reds, this wine would be the perfect introduction as it has a sweetness that is more reminiscent of a rose blend than a shiraz.

Overall rating: 3/5
